For the Love of—! On Fancomics & Doujins

The comics community had best make room, because creators of fancomics are making a name (or pseudonym, at least) for themselves, in fandoms far and wide. They’re gaining accolades, recognition, and their very own fanbases for their canon-inspired works, and drawing a divide between “legitimate” and fan comics is going out of fashion. Known for both their original art and fancomics, Annisa Adjani (Dreamworks), Erica Jones (Cartoon Network), Rebecca Mock (Compass South), and Tina Wang (various) talk about the impulses behind making fanart, what distinguishes fan vs. original art (if anything!), and navigating an irl creative career while maintaining an active fandom persona.

Blast From the Past: Pro Artists Before They Got Good

The artists on this panel are excellent at what they do. Except, well, that hasn’t always been the case. We can talk all we want about the importance of hard work (and we certainly will), but we’re going to prove it, too. Join brave souls Becky Dreistadt (Tiny Kitten Teeth), Em Partridge (Adventure Time), Leslie Hung (SNOTGIRL), and Sophia Foster-Dimino (Sex Fantasy) as they expose their earliest works to the light of day and talk about the paths they’ve traveled. On this panel, we’ll shatter the illusion that talent is born, not made. We’ll lay waste to the notion that not everyone can do art. And we’ll prove, once and for all, that grueling practice pays off.

2PM - 2:45PM

Special Guest Spotlight — Sam Bosma

Spotlight on cartoonist Sam Bosma, of Fantasy Sports #1 and Fantasy Sports #2 fame. Hosted by Kris Mukai (My Car’s A Spaceship).
